In terms of the turtles, these bowls are heavily inspired by Gary Irby, one of my ceramics teachers who paints abstract turtles and other aboriginal rock painting influenced designs on his pots in iron oxide (brown), cobalt carbonate (blue), and black slip.

When I paint turtles, they tend to sprout wings and really fancy tails....I guess I can't resist the urge to turn everything into a dragon? I use mostly iron oxide for this sort of thing (decided I hate black slip after it got too diluted and I had a batch of bowls come out of the kiln with really faded designs >_< ).

Also, note the house of Feanor emblem (eight-pointed star) in the center bowl. *slips Tolkien references into everything*
